Guide to pictures of works by Canaletto
Canaletto was an Italian
painter born in 1697. He got his initial training from his
father. Canaletto was a townscape painter and he principally
painted Venice. Architectural Caoriccio in 1723 was one of his
paintings that reflect the perfection of his
training.
Canaletto moved to Rome in
1719-20 and there he followed the Roman views shown in the
paintings of Panini’s paintings. He came back to Venice in 1721
and till 1767 he was included in Venetian painter’s guild
called fraglia. One of the finest works of Canaletto was The
Stonemason’s yard (1729) it was painted so beautifully with
rich colors and perfect contrasts of light and shades.

In 1730 Canaletto painted
a working arrangement with Joseph Smith who was later appointed
as British Consul in Venice. Joseph buys paintings from
Canaletto and sells them to British customers because in those
days many British visit Venice. To expand his English market he
traveled to Britain in 1746 but not succeeded much and returned
back to Venice . He had done painting till the time of his
death in 1768 but the popularity he gained in his early years
was never came back.
