Italian painter, Canaletto (real name: Giovanni Antonio Canal) was
born in Venice on October 28, 1697, and died inVenice on April 19, 1768.
Canaletto is known as for his sparkling views of Venice. Canaletto
studied painting and perspective with his father, a scene designer in
the high baroque tradition. Canaletto was highly influential in Italy and elsewhere. His nephew
Bernardo Bellotto took his style to Central Europe and his followers in
England included William Marlow and Samuel Scott.

Nuove' are late works by Canaletto depicting
views of the basilica of San Marco from either
side of the main piazza. This picture shows the
basilica framed by the pillars of an arcade to
the west of the Piazza.
The man standing on the right is holding a cup
and saucer. Florian's, one of the most famous
cafés in the Piazza, is nearby. Probably
painted, with its
pendant 'Piazza
San Marco and the Colonnade', in the late
1750s after Canaletto's return from England.
